Fitzgeralds Hut, Falls Creek, Victoria, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Fitzgeralds Hut resides near the village of Falls Creek in the Alpine National Park. Getting there requires a 10km return walk over reasonably gentle terrain, when taking Big River Fire trail from Rocky Valley Pondage. The walk is lovely, and well recommended during the warmer months as a day trip. In winter, of course, you'll need skis and instead be commencing the trek from the village, which will add a few kms to the journey. Close by you'll also find Kelly Hut, and plenty of magnificent old snow gums. With the sun out and a light breeze to keep you invigorated this can be one splendid outing. I'd even go so far as to give it the family friendly tick, so long as you understand it is still an alpine environment and the weather can turn serious at any time. For my own photographic purposes, I wanted fog and deliberately put this one off a few years until I had both the opportunity and forecast. Being quite familiar with hikes in the region, I decided to hike in quite late, sleep in the hut and be up for a dawn shoot. Fog can be a fickle thing, but this one was as thick as soup and hung around for hours, giving me plenty of time to try several compositions. Trudging out, through a heavy rain, I was quite damp, but elated to have capture the scene under the conditions I'd hoped for, and to have enjoyed another wild experience in the great outdoors.
