Edmondson Hut resides near the ski village of Falls Creek in Victoria. It was built in 1953 by grazer James (Jim) Edmondson who cut the timber at his property in Tawonga and carted it up to the Bogong High Plains on pack horse, along with iron for the walls, chimney and roof.
Designated as an official campground the hut is used by hikers and cross country skiers. Being only 5km or so from Rocky Valley Pondage, near Falls Creek village, it is a popular choice to camp. As such it can be near impossible to shoot an image this like without an array of tents surrounding the hut. I learned this the hard way over the course of many repeated attempts to capture this scene, the first of which began over three decades ago.
I tried photographing it in winter, under snow, but that merely produced thousands of footprints from campers. In terms of direct light, it faces the rising sun, but quickly becomes dappled. In the evening it is deeply backlit. As such I determined that fog was going bring something extra to the table. The quest then became finding an opportunity to visit the area when there was both a forecast for fog and at a time not popular with fellow backpackers.
Finally this year I managed it, am very happy with the way the image turned out. There is something magical about this little forest glen. The trees are enchanting, particularly when the dawn light gently paints them as is it did on this occasion.
