View Larger on Chockstone Photography If you are driving from Omeo up to Mount Hotham, you will reach Dinner Plain ski village about 15 minutes before the summit. Dinner Plain offers accommodation options for those wanting to stay on the mountain. During the snow season a shuttle bus will scoot you up the last few kilometers to the ski lifts. Driving up, it is almost impossible to miss this rustic little dwelling on the roadside. It is a popular spot to park, check your tires, throw a snowball or two, and of course snap a family picture beside the hut. Given the ease of access I knew I would have to put in the hard yards to come up with something special. Every time I drove over this way, I'd make a point of allowing time for investigating the hut, and often shooting the sunrise. It is a surprisingly tricky subject given that it faces the rising sun and is only a stone's throw from a major road. Being in an alpine region the weather is very unpredictable and when it does snow heavily, people will invariably leave thousands of footprints. As luck would have it, a chilly spring dawn brought with it a fresh carpet of snow which dusted the surrounding trees to perfection without a footprint in sight. After so many years of trying I had my favourite compositions well planned and had merely to await the light. A lovely morning and hopefully, a unique image.
