    Difference Engine Engineer
This is a portrait of an anonymous Difference Engine Engineer, cheaply painted for his 45th birthday, by which stage he was nearly blind. He probably was in charge of about 15 10 year olds from the workhouse, who would crawl in between the large clogs to remove rats that were attracted by the many small children crushed by the large cogs. Many would say the best Difference Engines were lubricated by the blood of the children, and beer, as the Difference Engine Engineers were almost as bad as navvys, when it came to drinking binges.
