Cooinbil Hut, Kosciuszko, New South Wales, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Cooinbil Hut resides out on the high country plains of Kosciuszko National Park beside the Murrumbidgee River. With vehicle access from the Snowy Mountains Highway to the hut quite simple and the wide open expanse of Long Plain reaching out before it, the location has become understandably very popular with riders. It is common to see many horses in the yards, lots of floats parked nearby and tents set up for camping under the shade of the trees. Originally built in 1866 the little dwelling was replaced in 1905 and again saw renovations in 1987 after a large limb from the nearby tree fell on it. With two rooms and a double brick chimney with separate kitchen, the little weatherboard cottage would have been quite cosy. Certainly with enough imagination you can picture a life here, albeit quite an isolated one. My interest in the location has always been purely photographic. Over several decades I have made many an attempt at capturing its beauty initially by myself, and then later joined by our son. Given the ease of access you would have thought it would be a straightforward image to make, but the northern Kosciuszko weather can be quite frustrating, often dealing us empty blue skies or heavy storms with nothing in between. Finally, on a late autumn evening the conditions came together to produce this colourful scene just as the very last lick of light painted the hut.
