This delightful little waterfall derives its name from a tradition formed in the 1930’s and 40’s where-by ladies travelling via train from Melbourne would separate from the men in their group and take a dip in the cool waters of Crystal Creek to break their journey before heading to the mountain chalet. Only a short distance from the road up Mt Buffalo, it continues to be a popular spot to have a splash on a hot summer’s day.
Having photographed this location a number of times over many years, it can be a little challenging to have the place to one’s self long enough, but the answer is pretty simple, and that is to arrive early in the morning. The water flows all year around, but certainly winter will provide the most volume.
As for Mt Buffalo itself, it is quite possibly one of the best places in Victoria to explore at any time of the year. Winter will provide the possibility of snow, but without the gate fees that taller peaks with ski resorts will incur. There’s a wealth of walking tracks and camping at Lake Catani, but first time visitors really should head straight to the old historic chalet to take in the amazing views across the gorge.
