Catherine Hill Bay is a tiny locality not that far from Newcastle on the New South Wales central coast. The beach is really lovely, though it does become quite popular on weekends. There is a surf club, with showers, and a heritage-listed pub and that is about it, which makes it about perfect in terms of family beach destinations.
My interest in the area was purely photographic in nature. The old jetty faces into the rising sun, which was too much of an opportunity to ignore. I went back to this location many times, during various photography trips, spread out over years. I needed a tide height that allowed access, whilst still presenting foreground interest, in combination with some colour and excitement in the sky.
This particular morning started out looking grim indeed, with too much low cloud. With my composition set up I was half asleep on the rocks, waiting for the light, when suddenly it was all happening. The light was there only for maybe five minutes, but that was enough to obtain a few variations of shutter speeds. I eventually choose this long exposure, which reflects the peace and calm I was feeling.
