View Larger on Chockstone Photography Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula is an extremely popular costal holiday destination only an hour and a half out of Melbourne. During summer the crystal clear calm beaches at Sorrento and Portsea see flocks of visitors enjoying the endless blue shallow warm water with their families. The beautiful beaches stretch for many kilometres and during peak season are packed with campers. Million dollar mansions hug the bays. Throngs of beach goers sit in cafes sipping lattes while youngsters talk of jet skis and surfboards. If you don’t like floating in a big bath, you can drive 10 minutes or so and be at the thundering surf beaches on the adjacent side of the promontory instead. The prom is also littered with golf courses, some quite classy and expensive, judging by the pricy European cars parked there. Not that golf is my thing. I’d be more inclined to recommend the walk out to Cape Schank. The waves crashing over the rocks, bird life, potential seal sighting, sharp salty air and well-marked easy trail is surely more enjoyable than hitting a little white ball around some grass. When you’re sick of the crowds on the west side head to the east side, where you’ll find little towns like Flinders that have all those pokey little craft shops that excite wives of a certain generation (mine included) and far, far less people, making the task of strolling up and down shops actually pleasant. There’s also a multi chef hat restaurant for those with deep pockets and plenty of good old pub meals and fish shops for us mortals. Flinders give you that small seaside village feel that beach holidays should be like.
