Blue Lake resides on the Main Range of Kosciuszko National Park and is a great example of a natural alpine wetland. It is one of only four glacial lakes on mainland Australia. Access is easiest by walking in from Charlotte Pass, though in winter this means catching some over snow transport. Alternatively you can talk a longer hike from Guthega, and follow the snowy river up to the range via Little Twynam, which does require some off-track navigation skills and should be undertaken only by experienced hikers, well equipped for challenging conditions.
During one early winter trip I did just that, managing to get myself to the lake shore in reasonable weather. There was no snow at that point, but I was still able to capture this image a little before sunset. Moments later low cloud greatly reduce visibility, and an icy wind funnelled up the valley.
Not being allowed to camp anywhere near the lake, meant I needed to continue further along the main range, or retreat. With the forecast looking grim indeed, I chose the latter, eventually getting back to Guthega well after dark, tired by very happy with my photographs.
