Garlic Chive flowers, which are also edible, bloom in the warmth of summer, which is in contrast to the early spring flowers of regular Chives. Allium tuberosum is commonly known as garlic chives, Chinese chives, Oriental garlic or Chinese leek. Leaves are the shape between the shape of an onion and garlic. The herb tastes a bit more like garlic than chives or onions. It is also ideal for the garden; the upright, grassy foliage looks great tucked in with other perennials or in container gardens and the plants are frost hardy.
The majority of Allium species are native to the Northern Hemisphere, mainly in Asia. A few species are native to Africa and Central and South America. Species grow in various conditions from dry, well-drained mineral-based soils to moist, organic soils; most grow in sunny locations, but a number also grow in forests, or even in swamps or water.
