Imagining Sutton Hoo: The Eagles
Inspired by artefacts from the Sutton Hoo ship burial discovered in 1939. Although the famous 7th Century ship burial included objects from many different styles and cultures, I have focused on those which typify the Anglo-Saxon aesthetic. This design uses the eagle motifs which are distinctive for their square backed heads and spiral beaks from the "purse" as its central theme in conjunction with elements inspired by ornamental belt pieces, the gold belt buckle and shoulder ornamentation. The original items were constructed with gold, garnets and coloured glass.
