Black Cockatoo
There’s something very special about the Black Cockatoo. When I hear them calling, I stop whatever I’m doing to look to the sky and amaze at their grace. Their call is haunting yet a sound that brings me joy. I feel very lucky to have them around. According to bush lore, Black cockatoos will screech before coming rain. On another level, the black cockatoo represents spirit strengthening and significant changes in your life that can stir your emotions and make them ‘rain’. Glossy black-cockatoos are one of the more threatened species of cockatoo in Australia and are listed as vulnerable in NSW. Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos are the easiest to distinguish from the others, due to their namesake red tail feathers. Male Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos are black all over except for large, scarlet ‘windows’ on their tails that are visible when they fan their tail feathers. The tail feathers of female and juvenile Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos have black and orange bars, and their body feathers are black with pale edges and spots. As the glossy black-cockatoo nests in both living and dead trees, removing dead trees for firewood and other uses is harmful. Glossy black-cockatoos cannot nest without suitable tree hollows. Consider using fallen, dry green wood and allocate areas for wood collection on your property.
