Winter Branches
For the 25th anniversary of 9/11, I decided to spend the past few weeks painting some of the photos taken for our visit to New York in watercolor, this one being from our January 2000 visit, and the last time I ever saw the Twin Towers with my own eyes. I began with a pale blue-gray wash for the sky and kept the towers themselves intentionally restrained, using soft cream, cool gray, and just a trace of warm reflected color. Once the washes were dry, I added the branches with a fine brush, varying the pressure so some lines remained crisp while others disappeared into the background.
