WINTER DOWN
During the winter months... Ducks, Geese and Swans, preen their outer coat of feathers - particularly on their chest, using their beak to create an almost zippered up like meshwork of warm pockets of feathers - called down... The outer feathers being more structured create the exterior shell whilst the lighter aerated feathers (down) are zippered up... Just like a puffa jacket!
It is this unique meshwork fabrication that allows members of the Anatidae family (Ducks, Geese and Swans) to survive through the winter in often very cold conditions.
