Two Towers, One Sky
For the 25th anniversary of 9/11, I decided to spend the past few weeks painting some of the photos taken for our 1995 visit to New York in watercolor. In this one, I wanted the composition to feel quiet and almost abstract, with those enormous rectangular forms interrupting a soft New York sky. I laid in the buildings with pale honey, mauve, gray, and muted blue, allowing darker washes to collect along the shadowed sides while leaving generous areas of untouched paper for reflected light. The antenna was added with a much finer brush once everything else had dried. Rather than painting every window, I suggested the façade through restrained lines and tonal bands.
