The Flag
For this view, I placed the American flag boldly in the foreground and allowed the city to spread quietly beneath it. The flag was painted with clear red and blue washes, preserving small white shapes for the stars and stripes, while the buildings below were kept pale and atmospheric. Grace Cathedral and the surrounding hills help give the scene its unmistakable San Francisco character. I wanted the flag to feel animated by the same steady wind that has shaped so many afternoons in this city.
