Spring Blues
Blue Squill (Scilla) Savanna, Illinois (USA) ==== _Scilla_ is a genus of perennial herbs in the family _Asparagaceae_, native to Russia, Europe, Africa and the Middle-East. Many species such as pictured are now naturalized in Australia, New Zealand and North America. ===== Incidentally, should you live in Russia, don’t pick the squill! It’s native there ~ but it’s endangered; so picking is illegal. ==== Here in Mid-America, some insist they’re crowding out the wildflowers which belong here such as bloodroot and trilliums, and they view it as invasive. Others say it’s not a problem since it blooms so early in the spring then fades away before the others even sprout. I tend to think the latter. They’re ephemerals: they only bloom a few short days before they’re gone. Technically tey may not be “native”, but they’re sweetly-scented and they’re beautiful. They attarct the honey-bees as well. ==== Among the first wildflowers of the spring to bloom here in Illinois, they’re very tiny flowers, less than half an inch across but when they carpet an entire hill or meadow ~ wow! ===== Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8
