Raised to Perform examines the quiet inheritance of performance: the roles we are taught to play long before we understand that they are roles.
A suspended child-like figure stands next to its adult counterpart, connected by an unbroken line that resembles both a puppet string and a lifeline. Together they reveal a painful truth: many identities are rehearsed before they are chosen.
The work merges contemporary Black portraiture with toy aesthetics, fashion imagery, and graphic interventions to expose how society rewards obedience disguised as personality. The exaggerated features, mask-like facial markings, and carefully styled appearance question whether authenticity can survive in a world that constantly scripts who we should become.
Rather than portraying transformation as freedom, the composition suggests that adulthood often becomes a perfected performance of lessons learned in childhood. The self is polished, branded, and displayed, while the child who first learned to perform remains suspended, still waiting to be seen beyond expectation.
Raised to Perform invites viewers to confront the invisible choreography of identity and to ask where performance ends and personhood begins.
