M R James
A truly great writer - certainly one of the best ghost story writer's of the twentieth century. Montague Rhodes James' work might be considered as outdated, or not gory enough for some, but the subtlety of the horror described, the isolation and the creeping sense of dread is better manifested by him than anyone else writing in the genre. If you haven't read him, you are in for a treat! Try 'A Warning to the Curious', 'Oh, Whistle, And I'll Come To You, My Lad' or for a comic tale, 'Number 13'. There's also the admirably scary film, 'Night of the Demon (or 'Curse of the Demon'), based on 'Casting the Runes. And of course the BBC Christmas adaptations - eerie as well.
