James Figg
James Figg (1684 – 7 December 1734) was an English bare-knuckle boxer and fencing master. He is widely recognized as the first English bare-knuckle boxing champion, reigning from 1719 to 1730.
There are several accounts on the man as being a highly regarded and highly respected fencing master and all around fencer, even being considered as the "Atlas of the Sword", but sadly, he didn't leave any written treatise. If you're looking for a more in-depth look on the man, I suggest contacting Martin Oz Austwick as he was kind enough to give me so much information that I sadly could not mention it all here.
He seemed to have quite a interesting relationship with the painter William Hogarth, which was a fan and friend of Figg and coincidentally depicted him as characters in several of his paintings.
