I Rise
The description of this piece is long, but you won't regret reading it. I promise. This piece was inspired by one of my very dearest friends, who recently celebrated the anniversary of her survival of an attempt by a former associate to potentially kill her by packing her chute backwards when she went up for a skydive. Due to the way it was packed, if she'd have cut the chute, as divers often do if the main chute opens badly, she would have immediately crashed to the ground, because her reserve would not have opened at all. Dropping altitude fast, and with no real capacity to see where she was landing, her landing compounded her injuries from the fall when she ended up splayed across electrical lines pumping over 12,000 volts. The medical team responding to the scene took over 20 minutes to respond because they'd given her up as dead before they even arrived. But she lived, and thrived, and this former Victoria Secret model is living a joyous life as a teacher with her husband (who also teaches) and son today. I knew about the story, but when I found out that the anniversary of the event was coming up and that she was going to commemorate it with another (possibly her final) skydiving session, this image immediately flashed in my brain and I knew I had to give her a tribute with this image. The title is inspired by Sylvia Plath's entirely apropos poem, "Lady Lazarus." A part of it reads: Out of the ash I rise with my red hair And I eat men like air. Oh, did I mention she also happens to be a redhead? This poem is 100% Gina, in every way; the woman who fell, over and over again, most of the time in much less dramatic ways than this. And yet, over and over again, against all odds, and, like all of us, sometimes uncertain she could do anything but survive for the next battle, she rose up and did it again the next day. But always, she rose. Always she defeated her demons. Today and every day. And I love her like crazy for it. She'll always be one of my heroes.
