Fitting In
ABOUT THE PIECE: Exercising has never been something I’ve enjoyed. I enjoy the feeling after completing some form of exercise, but never the process. In shopping around to find a gym, nothing ever felt like the right fit for me and I’d constantly look around and think, “I do not belong here.” My illustration “Fitting In” is a play on words for the many ways women try to “fit in”: trying to fit in to a group of people with whom I feel I have nothing in common; trying to fit into trendy fitness clothing that only accentuates my rolls; trying to fit in the time to exercise when I am drowning in deadlines and not spending the time needed at work or with my family. As with each of my illustrations in the “Can I Take off the Cape Now?” series, “Fitting In” is created as a monochromatic image using black pen, with the addition of a single color to signify a critical concept. The color purple is often symbolic of royalty, and I utilized this color in my illustration to further draw attention to this separation in status. Original pen and ink illustration by Molly Green Curtiss. One of fourteen illustrations in my series titled, "Can I Take Off the Cape Now?" © 2019
