Energetic Reds
This work comes out of an organic process of image shaping and evolution. That is to say I start with an initial pattern and keep working and reworking it introducing new processes, trying to make it better, introducing another process, trying to make that better and so on until it takes on a life of its own - something I didn't plan but whose qualities appealed to me. Conceptually I am interested in duality like that between circles and squares or a geometric order and an organic form or order. But aesthetically I just want something that appeals to my sense of life and wholeness. At first glance this image is dominated by squares and the grid but if you zoom in the surface is actually made up of a pattern of circles – a bit like molecules in a matrix forming a crystal. The process of creating it also produces a kind of grainy quality, a bit like sandstone. The use of red in this work is very saturated and the patches of blue-violet (best seen up close) adds a kind of optical buzz, making this one of the most intense patterns I've created.
