EARLY WARNING
This piece reflects memories of mine when i was younger and my friends and I use to travel down to Byron Bay, Nimbin and Mount Warning quite often on road trips.
The real name of Mt Warning is Wollumbin. The mountain remains a place of cultural and traditional significance to the Bundjalung people and is a sacred site where particular ceremonies and initiation rites are performed.
There is one particular dreamtime story that I love of this area where Wollumbin is said to be the Warrior Chief of the mountain. The spirits of these mountains were warriors. The wounds they received in their epic battles can be seen as scars running up the sides of the mountain and the thunder and lightning seen high in the skies around it are the results of their savage battles.
Such a dominant and awe inspiring place, it is truly a beautiful part of our country and culture.
