County Lock In Reading
Looking downstream at County Lock on the River Kennet Navigation in Reading, Berkshire, England. This is close to the centre of Reding and the Oracle shopping centre. The area here was once the hub of Simonds brewery and would have been busy with water traffic. The site is now mainly apartments and offices The lock has the lowest fall of any lock on the Kennet and Avon - only 1 foot! The canal dates from 1794-1810 although the present lock was not built until 1876, replacing an older one.
