Magnolia soulangeana Taken in Savanna, Illinois (USA) Named after French botanist Pierre Magnol, Magnolia is a large genus of over 210 plant species in the subfamily Magnolioideae_. This is a Saucer Magnolia, sometimes called a tulip tree, woody orchid or Japanese magnolia though the plant is a hybrid native to China, not Japan. Certain signs of spring, these trees look fragile, delicate and beautiful but have survived everything from ice ages, volcanic winters, continental drift and the meteoric impact theorized to send the dinosaurs to extinction, so are tougher than they look. The species over-all is very ancient. Fossilised specimens date to 20 million years ago, and some plants belonging to the family date back as much 95 million years. They appeared on Earth prior to the bees, so instead evolved to rely on beetles for pollination. Saucer magnolias, found in the northern USA are related to, but distinctly different from the giant white magnolias seen in the Southern USA (_magnolia grandiflora and magnolia virginica).
