Across the Water
For the 25th anniversary of 9/11, I decided to spend the past few weeks painting some of the photos taken for our 1995 visit to New York in watercolor. In this painting, I began by wetting much of the sky and water and dropping in diluted blues, pinks, and warm grays, letting them spread with very little interference. Once those washes dried, I built the skyline with small blocks of terracotta, charcoal, cream, and dusty violet. The towers needed surprisingly little detail, as their scale and shape did most of the work. I kept the water especially loose, using broken horizontal strokes rather than literal reflections.
