View Larger on Chockstone Photography Built in 1948 for grazing and brumby running Teddys Hut is constructed of mountain ash slabs with a stone fireplace and corrugated iron chimney. It's located about 10km from Dead Horse Gap car park, not far from the little ski village of Thredbo. Note, you'll need a Parks Pass to leave your car there. As an overnight hike, it's well recommend due to the gentle gradient which barely rises as you head upstream following the Thredbo River through "Big Boggy", and offers a nice gradual decline heading out the same way. It can also be done as long, and tiring 20km day walk. The main thing to be aware of is the condition of the "track" which at about the two thirds mark disappears at a river crossing, leaving you to pick your own way through the increasingly soggy terrain. I managed to keep my feet dry, despite sinking knee level a couple of times. A good pair of gators are required! Speaking to some of the other walkers I came across, one had taken a dunking trying to jump a section of the stream and another had slipped on a wet rock and incurred a head injury. So whilst it’s a moderately easy walk in terms of gradient and feels considerably less exposed compared to the nearby Kosciuszko summit region, it’s not exactly tame either. In terms of navigation, I found sticking to the river edge, following horse pads helped, and only occasionally weaving up hill to avoid the worst of the mud. If you can’t see the river, you’re off course. And of course the good thing about following a stream is being able to carry less drinking water. At the end of the trek you’ll enter a marshland where you'll need to follow the valley leftwards to find the hut, which is quite hidden away. There's a lovely copse of trees there that makes an inviting place to camp. Please do not underestimate how cold it gets at night, even in summer. Bring plenty of layers and a heavy winter sleeping bag. It’s a surprisingly popular hike, so expect to be sharing the campsite if you go on a sunny weekend. You’ll need a tent, the hut is small, with a dirt floor and is really for emergency shelter only. Hope I haven’t put you off, because it’s a delightful walk and a really pretty region when the weather is good. Well recommended.
