View Larger on Chockstone Photography Ritches Hut is tucked away along a pleasant 6km hike beside the Howqua River not too far from Mansfield in a region known as the Howqua Hills Historic Area. The track begins from the Eight Mile Camping Area a short drive from the popular Sheepyard Flat. Walkers can choose to take the low way and share passage with horse riders, or take the high way, gain a little altitude above the river, get some splendid views towards Mt Buller and avoid stepping in horse poo! It's easy enough going that our boy, seven at the time comfortably managed to make the hut, camp, and walk out the next day. The only thing I'd mention in terms of parental duties would be to watch out for snakes. Although we didn't see any other parties had reported sighting one, and there was mention in the hut log as well. The hut was originally built in 1947 for fishing, and sits quite close to the river. There's a corral for horses, but it's a bit fallen down. However, as a photographic device it came in handy as a leading line. A bit of rain also helped to make the trees glisten and add to the overall lush feeling. Being deep in the valley, and a reasonable walk in, there's a real sense of peace and isolation.
