Resting

A Kirby's Dropwing having a rest on the dam wall at our farmhouse, Oslaagte, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. 'n Naaldekoker, die rotshangvlerkie, rus 'n oomblikkie in die son. There are approximately 750 species of dragonfly in Africa, with the greatest diversity in the tropics. South Africa is home to 158 species (90 ‘true' dragonflies, and 68 damselflies). Dragonflies differ from damselflies in being stouter and larger in shape, having eyes which are joined on the top of the head, and in having differently shaped fore and hind wings. The Kirby's Dropwing or the Orange-winged Dropwing (Trithemis kirbyi) is widespread over much of Africa. It is a species of dragonfly in family Libellulidae and occurs well into the Middle East, parts of Asia and on many islands in the Indian Ocean.
