View Larger on Chockstone Photography The Howqua Hills Historic Area is home to several old huts and excellent camping areas, all nested beside the Howqua River not far from Mansfield. Some of best include Sheepyard Flat, Pickerings Flat and Frys Flat. It’s great spot to bivvy for the night before heading up Mt Bulla or Mt Stirling. Having visited numerous times before I was very familiar with the rough, winding forest tracks, but completely taken by surprise when the morning light pierced through a rising fog to create a magical scene like something out of a story book. Usually my landscape photography is the result of persistently returning to reshoot locations, sometimes over the course of many years. Here, however, was a serendipitous moment in time gifted, as it were, by nature herself. I leapt out of the car and hastily worked the scene, shifting and releveling my tripod with each composition, bracketing exposures to handle the vast range between shadows and highlights. As someone already passionate about this craft, I drove home reinvigorated by witnessing such a marvellous morning, my mind swirling with more photographic ideas.
