View Larger on Chockstone Photography Geelong Grammar School (GGS) Hut sits very near the summit of Mt Stirling. It can be accessed in winter on cross country skis, or on foot, via series of well maintained ski trails, and offers shelter from the elements for adventurers all throughout the year. At 1749 metres Mt Stirling offers fantastic views and a great alpine experience. Devoid of ski resorts and lifts, it lacks the crowding and commercial feel, but still has groomed ski trails, and well documented walking tracks, many taking you passed a small collection of historic mountain huts. Only a short drive from Mansfield, the Mt Stirling experience generally starts from Telephone Box Junction. From there a hike to the summit including two or three huts such as King Spur Hut, GGS Hut and Bluff Spur Hut, is around 12km, or closer to 14km if you include Razorback Hut as well. It is quite steep so you'll need to plan for being on the mountain most of the day.
