The Seagull Committee
Anyone who has spent enough time around the California coast knows that gulls rarely look as though they are merely standing around; they look like a committee. I painted this wonderfully crowded group with overlapping pale washes, varying the grays, browns, pinks, and beak colors so each bird retained a little personality. The loose pencil outlines help preserve that sketchbook spontaneity I wanted rather than turning the flock into a formal wildlife portrait.
