Upper Jamieson Hut, Howqua Hills, Victoria, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Upper Jamieson Hut was built by Fred Fry in the 1930s as a refuge during forestry work. It sits nestled beside the lovely Jamieson River, deep in a valley. Hidden from the world, it has become a destination for off roaders looking to escape more populated camping areas such as Sheepyard Flat. Getting there requires some effort, including a couple of hours of rough and winding dirt road driving. Follow Brocks Road until the turn off where you will find a small river crossing. You will certainly do not want to tackle this crossing without a four-wheel drive and good clearance. It is barely more than the width of the road, but deceptively deep after heavy rain. I have seen videos of vehicles almost swept downstream. Another point to consider is that accessing Upper Jamieson Hut from Howqua Hills out of Mansfield requires ascending high enough that snow over the road will be an issue during winter. Having said that, we had no trouble in our Forester, including clearing the stream with ease, during summer. Originally, I was intent of capturing this scene in fog, or at the very least low cloud. However, after a couple of failed goes at it, one dawn instead revealed some wonderful golden light. I had to work quickly before it became too intense but was able to settle on a composition that showed off the wildflowers as well. What a great spot in which to awaken.
