Ilperveld, Landsmeer , the Netherlands The birds observation hut, seen from the water. Ilperveld The Ilperveld (Google maps ) is a 1.000 hectare peatland area in the North of Amsterdam, belonging to the municipality Landsmeer. It is a natural area shaped by nature and human hands. The first inhabitants digged ditches to irrigate the original peat moor. The upper peat layers dried up, causing the ground to sink. The Southern Sea caused in the course of ages for several floods. The salt, added to the ground, creates a specific biotope for special plants. Peat cutters transformed the area intro a true puzzle of little pieces of land, divided by ditches, small canals and little lakes. Farmers could only reach the meadows by boat. As sailing farmers, they already for hundreds of years provide Amsterdam and surroundings of meat and milk. They care for the land and the water in a way, that water and meadow birds continue to return to the area, year after year.
