Lone Tree, Kiandra, Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography The Snowy Mountains Highway is a scenic driving route through the northern end of Kosciuszko National Park between Tumut and Cooma. If you have ever tried departing the Hume Freeway and heading to the east coast of New South Wales, chances are you may have already taken this road. It winds its way up onto a snowy plateau with wide open plains containing a number of trails, off road tracks, high country huts and rivers to explore. Wild horses roam the meadows alongside mountain bikers, hikers and four wheel drive enthusiasts. In winter the gates are generally shut making any snowy adventures something you would seek further south, at Thredbo or Jindabyne instead. However, as luck would have it we were returning home from a photography trip via this route and happened to catch the last weekend before said closure. As a result, the plains were sprinkled with snow, making for a novel experience that was not lost on fellow travellers who keen for some snow play to break their drive. We joined them and, as usual, started hunting for photographs. Initially our boy was racing around trying to capture an image of the many rabbits that dotted the white landscape like chocolate sprinkles. They were a little too shy for him, but it was fun trying. As the sun began to sink, my attention was drawn to this unusual tree, sitting all alone on the wide open fields whilst the low cloud closed in, and temperatures dropped towards freezing.
