View Larger on Chockstone Photography Govetts Leap in the beautiful Blue Mountains is a well-known lookout in the popular little town of Blackheath, New South Wales. Six hundred metres straight down "the leap" offers grand views across the Grose Valley and is probably second only to the Three Sisters in terms of tourism. Being such an iconic location I knew this scene deserved a lot of my time, so quite a few years ago I set myself the task of turning up here for dawn whenever I could manage it. Initially I would brave the 20 hour drive just for one attempt. Then over the years my enthusiasm waned a bit as I realized the weather seemed intent on providing me with one fully clouded in morning after another. Occasionally I was greeted by empty skies, with a bit of rising fog, which made a nice shot certainly, but I knew it could deliver more. Travelling up and down the NSW coast working on my landscape photography, I would always try to make room in my plans for an extended “power-nap” at Govetts Leap. On this occasion, I set my alarm for an half hour before sunrise and, as usual, witnessed the inside of some clouds. With the camera set up, I sat down to wait and actually managed to drift off again, this time on the cold ground. I was awoken by some excited voices beside me. A couple of tourists had chanced the early morning too. I immediately jumped into action and was blown away by the beauty before me. A decade or more of reshoots was about to pay off. I worked feverously to capture the amazing scene, and had literally seconds to get the job done before the light was gone. And to think, I’d almost slept through it!
