Diamantina Hut, Mt Hotham, Victoria, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Diamantina Hut sits atop Mt Hotham not far from the summit, and Hotham Heights ski village. With its distinctive A-frame design and easy access, chances are you've a memory of it already, if you've ever driven up Hotham. Inside its utilitarian in the extreme, but the hut makes a great staging area to meet up with friends before embarking on the ever popular Hotham to Feathertop overnight hike – a walk that follows the Razorback Ridge, passed breathtaking views, to a campsite below Mt Feathertop. Although this walk is arguably one of the very best in Victoria, a few points of warning should be noted. Firstly, as you can see from this image, winter is not the time to attempt it. It's not exactly the Himalayas but lives have been lost. The track is invisible under the snow, and even a hut like Diamantina can be swallowed in totally calm conditions, let alone a blizzard. Summer, unfortunately presents a different issue, one of water. It gets very hot on the ridgeline, particularly in the early afternoon. Carrying overnight gear you'll easily go through four litres per person per day, with zero chance of finding water until the campsite, and even that shouldn't be considered guaranteed. So, spring or autumn would be my recommendation. Of course, then there is the issue of overcrowding. Sharing the beauty of the mountains with several dozen others might not be your cup of tea, so if you can, try to manage a weekday rather than a weekend. As for Diamantina Hut, well just think, it's there right now waiting to welcome strangers and old friends alike.
