View Larger on Chockstone Photography Built in 1929 by sledding materials in Cope Hut is made from adzed softwood and polished hardwood with a corrugated iron roof. These days it's a pleasant drive down a sealed road and barely 5 minutes walk. Some 30 or more years ago when I was a young lad a mate and I began an ambitious hike. We trekked up the steep Mt Bogong, down the other side, forded a stream so cold I could feel the pain hours later, then up to Falls Creek, past Wallace Hut and finally made Cope Hut in the dark just as it began to snow. The first dump of the season, well ahead of any forecast. As we had no snow gear, and nothing modern like thermals or down jackets it was a chilly night and a nightmare the next morning laboriously post holing our way out to Falls Creek Village sans snow shoes or skis. During that night in Cope Hut a rat balanced on my chest as I slept, peering at me when I awoke. Funny how you remember these little adventures years later.
