Bantry Brendan (Co. Cork, Ireland)
A Kerryman, Saint Brendan the Navigator, has a great statue in west Cork. Down at the end of Wolfe Tone Square facing the daunting Atlantic Ocean - or well, Whiddy Island and Bantry Bay, he stands aloft in his little leather boat of bronze, up on a limestone plinth with his arms outstretched, afraid not of sea monsters or Celtic waves. For my money it looks like he's trying to hide that he's actually transporting one of the leaders of the Third Reich away across the Atlantic. But I obviously like it a hell of a lot, and have stared up at it quite a lot. I think the statue is by the sculptor Imogen Stuart, and I'm very happy with this painting of it.
