There's something very magical about dragonflies. They embody the technical wonder of tiny living things, with splashes of colour in flight, suggestive of the joy and messiness that comes with the freedom of being. When given the option of choosing different colour backgrounds on certain products, I strongly recommend sticking with a white background. --- This particular little dragonfly was my poolside companion on a perfect day out for a bit of R&R. I was lazily drifting around in the water when this dazzling creature flew onto the scene. It darted in to touch the surface of the water and then came to rest on the edge of the pool, and every now and then would repeat this process of dipping in and chilling out. I slowly approached the place where it was sitting until we were face to face. 'He' seemed totally unphased by my proximity as we gazed at each other for a long while. I so enjoyed drinking in all the intricate details of his wings, his beautifully blue body, tiny hairs on legs with the cutest little feet at the end of each one, and wondering what was going through that tiny mind as he stared back at me. He hung around for a while longer, dipping in and out of the water again, and giving me ample time to fetch my phone and take a few close up snaps when he came to rest at the same spot. These photos became the inspiration for this painting - the memory of a perfect moment on a perfect day, because in that moment nothing else mattered and my heart was utterly content. --- This original dragonfly artwork was made with ink liners and watercolour paint.
