Harbor View
For the 25th anniversary of 9/11, I decided to spend the past few weeks painting some of the photos taken for our 1995 visit to New York in watercolor. I deliberately kept the foreground busy but soft, using small broken shapes in gray-green, brick red, lavender, and warm cream to suggest the thousands of buildings without laboriously describing every one. The harbor was painted much more freely, with broad diluted blue and mauve washes and only the lightest indications of shorelines and boats. The Twin Towers anchor the left side of the composition, tall enough to remain unmistakable even within such a wide panorama.
