Blood Rocks
In Mythology it is believed that the red colouring in Blood Rocks are the stains of blood from a Dragon.
It is actually a red resin produced from a variety of trees growing in South East Asia, East Africa, Canary Islands, West Indies and also in South America. The constituents of this resin are numerous and differ according to their source.
It has been used as a medicine and colourant since ancient times.
This image is a depiction of ordinary stones that have become impregnated with the resin. They were much sought after by Renaissance Artists to be ground into a pigment.
It is an extremely rare substance and very difficult to extract, and it is believed that it is where the expression 'getting blood from a stone' comes from
