Poppies and Cornflowers Mandala
Brilliant red poppies fill a kaleidoscope-like circular composition that includes bluebirds, butterflies and dragon flies. I was inspired by a super bloom of spring poppies interspersed with cornflowers, margarites and happy bees. It was like walking into the "Wizard of Oz" (you know the scene). The image is on silk, colored dyes were brushed on like watercolors and preserved with molten wax, applied with an electric wax pen. Wax was removed by ironing between sheets of paper. Silhouette scissors were used to cut along the details and for cutwork within the batik. 24 carat gold leaf highlights finish the piece. Notice gold leaf bees at the center.
