Cooper's hawk

We had a visitor today, a Cooper's hawk. My husband went to the kitchen about a half of an hour ago, to get some crackers, and says to me "there's a hawk on the bat house". I said "what?" and came running, figuring that he'd be there for a minute and take off. sure enough, just as I got there, he flapped down onto the snow, and started crawling/hopping under the holly bushes. Then he poked out the other side, closer to us now, and hopped under some more of the evergreens lining the walkway - then appeared again, and flew up onto the birdbath! After taking a brief drink, he hopped down on the other side of it (he's about 15 feet away now) and went rummaging under the other evergreen bushes, looking for the mice or voles we always see running around there. By this time I ran to get my camera. After he came out from under the bushes, he flew up onto the redbud tree, not even 10 feet from our doorwall (where we were standing, crowding each other out to get photos and a view, lol) and proceeded to pose for long enough for us both to get about 4-5 shots of him (I assume it's a him but I;m not sure) and then he flew down further away into the back, by the brush pile. He decided to hang out there, perched and looking around, low to the ground, for about 15 minutes. During this time, small songbirds started cautiously coming back in to the feeders, nabbing a seed but quickly, and dashing back into the safety of a bush or tree. I looked down for a minute at my camera, then back up to see a flurry of sparrows scattering and the hawk had disappeared under the brush pile, possibly with one of the sparrows that had flown just a bit too close to him. I couldn't tell for sure, but it looked like he was working on something under there. After a few minutes, he re-appeared, and has been hunkering down in the brush pile since.
