Every year sealers bludgeon seals with clubs and “hakapiks” (clubs with a metal hook on the end), drag conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, and toss dead and dying animals into heaps and leave their carcasses to rot because there is no market for their meat. Seals are also shot, but bludgeoning is preferred, because pelt buyers deduct money for every bullet hole in a seal’s skin. Veterinarians who studied a past hunt concluded that the hunters failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards and that 42 percent of the seals appeared to have been skinned alive. Despite Canada’s ‘new and improved’ methods being implemented this year, sealers are still slaughtering these pups in the same way they have for previous years. It’s unconscionable. Well Family ….i thought everyday was okiee dokiee you know with recieveing the / 22,000 scholarship to MCA / and i thought i could make some money at the JazzFest but things fell threw and i wasn’t able to attend And i still haven’t recieved a call notifying me of my position with this job so now i’m trying to find a way i can sell all my art / if there is any advice / any suggestion of places i can talk to bout have my art displayed and sold / anything at all because / when i attend MCA / i won’t be on campus because of my 2 dogs because i have to take them with me / so i’m going have to pay rent to stay somewheres out there and support myself / so i really need to rack up on money to have myself prepared till i find a job out there to support myself / well much love family take care …...

The Rottweiler, or Rottweil Metzgerhund (“Butchers Dog”), is a “medium to large size, stalwart dog” breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.” The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles including as messenger, draught and guard dogs. Currently they are often used as search and rescue, assistance, guide dogs for the blind, guard and police dogs in addition to their traditional roles. Although an extremely versatile breed used in recent times for many other purposes, the Rottweiler is first and foremost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of herding breeds. A multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog of exceptional ability, it is capable of working all kinds of livestock under a wide variety of conditions. The breed is an ancient one, whose history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman droving dog, local dogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands. This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil. I recently received a bubblemail from someone at the David Suzuki Foundation They are organizing a number of events for World Oceans Day. / World Oceans Day, June 8, is a time to remember the life-giving role of oceans. This international celebration, declared in 1992 at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has grown from a ripple into a tidal wave of awareness about the importance of our oceans. / One event is called ‘Party Like a Puffin’ where people organize their own beach parties. They were looking for a suitable illustration to help publicise the event and found my Puffin Party / So from May 6th my illustration will appear on their World Oceans Day page with a link to my RedBubble page. / Anyway the point of this journal entry is to say that for the period May 9th to June 9th any profit made from any sales I make on RedBubble will go to The David Suzuki Foundation. / If we don’t look after our oceans we are going to be in a ‘helluva mess’.

As an avid animal rights activist and vegetarian for over 15 years (and vegan for 2 years), I feel very strongly about the rights and welfare of animals. I also believe that sometimes, in order to get your point across, you have to be graphic. Sometimes that’s just the only way to get people’s attention. Granted, that’s not always the case; but I know it is sometimes necessary. I also like to use humor – that can be effective too. (Especially if you have a twisted sense of humor like me.)

That being said, this group’s focus is to get people’s attention and educate them about the reality of animals and their so-called ‘place’ in our society. This means creating images with messages! Themes can include everything from general pet care and pet adoption to vegetarianism/veganism and zoos – and everything in between. In other words, animals can’t tell us what they think or how they feel; when you create an image, make sure that animal’s voice is loud and clear!

NOTE: The message MUST be clear. In other words, don’t submit a photo of a puppy and simply state in the description that it means you shouldn’t buy from pet stores. Any image that doesn’t make a statement will be rejected.
