In the middle of Zurich there is an area where people lease areas to plant gardens. They plant fruit trees, vegetables, and they even build huts to store their tools and to relax with a cup of coffee or a glass of tea. This is the door to one of those huts. Lausanne (Switzerland) is a city with 125’000 inhabitants (without the suburbs), built on 3 hills being connected by 3 bridges. This one is the “Grand Pont” (Great Bridge), joining Bel Air to Saint-François. This bridge, the neuralgic centre of Lausanne, has been built between 1839 and 1844, it’s length is of 180 meters and it measures 25 meters at it’s biggest height. Initially, the bridge has been built with 2 levels of 5 and 19 arches, but in 1874, the valley of the river Flon has been filled in and the inferior range of arches then disappeared. The unique Bern Münster dates from 1421.This former Gothic cathedral boasts the tallest spire in the country. It also shelters some important medieval art, including painted sculptures over the portal and fine stained glass windows. The first church on this site was probably a small chapel, built around the time Bern was founded (1191). Its existence is first recorded in 1224. / On March 11, 1421, master builder Matthäus Ensinger (originally from Strasbourg) began construction on a monumental new cathedral. Work continued on the Münster for over a century. It was not fully completed until 1893, when the bell tower was added. In the meantime, Bern had become Protestant and the Berner Dom (cathedral) was now the Berner Münster (collegiate church). / The stained glass windows of the cathedral are considered the most valuable in Switzerland. The windows date from 1441-1450. Many of the windows include both heraldic symbols and religious images placed side by side.

Town Hall of Geneva, built during 15th century. Amazingly modern. / Here, countless treaties have been signed, conferences held and illustrious visitors received. It is in the Alabama room (so named for the mediation carried out here in 1872 between the United States and England, following the American Civil War, concerning the British ship “Alabama”) that the first Assembly of the Geneva Convention was held on August 18, 1864, from which was to emerge the International Red Cross. I was very much into black and white photography while living in Zurich 1972-3. This charming residence is in the “Gastarbeiter” suburb of Zurich, over the railway lines, to the west of Hauptbahnhof. This was taken with my beloved Pentax Asahi Spotmatic SLR camera.
The spring festival parade, annually in Zurich. / Photographed with Pentax Asahi Spotmatic SLR camera.

Pentax Optio 750Z 1/40 7mm F 2.8 ISO 200 – Point and Shoot / Overcast, grey and raining; grey stone and grey story. It is said that when the scuptor was not paid his dues, the image surrounding the lion took on the form of a pig – a comment perhaps of what he thought of the patron who kept the purse strings closed – I wonder? What I now find interesting – and disappointing – I can not recall the legend or story of the demise of the poor lion! / However with thanks to Lisa Williams and Wikapedia … / “A sculpture designed by Bertal Thorvaldsen. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris, France. / The dying lion is portrayed impaled by a spear, covering a shield bearing the fleu-de-lis of the French monarchy, beside him is another shield being the coat of arms of Switzerland. The inscription below the sculpture lists the names of the officers, and approximate number of soldiers who died (DCCLX =760) and survivors (CCCL=350) Wikapedia. / Taken in what I believe is Gletschergarten Lowendenkmal Luzern Switzerland. Perhaps someone can help me with the details? I had posted an earlier close up image of the lion which did not attract attention or comment. Can someone help? (Lisa Williams 17/11/09 … thank you!!)
“The Kapellbrucke (Chapel Bridge) is a 204m (670ft) long bridge crossing the Reuss River in the city of Lucerne in Switzerland. The oldest bridge in Europe, constructed in 1333 was designed to help protect the city from attacks. Inside the bridge are a series of paintings from the 17th century, depicting events from Luzerne’s history. Much of the bridge, and the majority of these paintings, were destroyed in a 1993 fire, though it was quickly rebuilt.” (Wikipedia) Fuji S5000, ISO-200, f/8 Featured in Fuji Fine (3/day, Model Req’d) November 2009
