  • Decked Out by Peter Marin

Stopped by to shoot the boys before heading off to see the girls. This was shot around 10:30am, so some good light was around which was great. I had my wife hold my flash low and off to the right of camera only about 2 mtrs away. The brief I give myself for shots like this with flash outdoors is pretty simple….......control the ambient light to a point where my flash will sync with the shutter speed. So that means the ISO will be driving the shot, I set it to 100, then set the shutter to 1/200th (max flash sync speed in manual mode). from there it’s just a case of adjusting the aperture until it read the desired underexposure which ended up being f/8, correct exposure showed f/13, flash output was pre-guessed at 1/2 power based on past shots from a similar distance to subject. / Processing involved a slight contrast mask and pumping the saturation up 25%, lastly I ran my Noiseware filter over the entire image at a very low setting. The shot details sound long winded I admit, but in reality it take only a few seconds. Generally I do my metering and adjustments while I’m talking to the people I’m going to shoot so there is no waiting around for me to get my act together.
