Back when the grand piano was first introduced to the desert climate there was much concern. Rightly so, there had been several independent tests conducted that showed less than promising results. / In many cases drooping occurred and even melting has taken place after a minimal exposure to the extreme heat, yet, here they are. Left here to fend for themselves. As I set up to shoot this sad sight / I saw, HIM. He appeared like a mirage, carrying an umbrella to shield himself from the deadly sun rays and had a bundle of sticks over his shoulder. I asked, “what are you doing out here?” He looked at me and said, “If you brace them, they will grow”. “A, WHAT?” “I said, If you brace them, they will grow, damn it!” I backed away / and sat down as he pulled out this tiny little pocket knife. I watched for hours in amazement as he carved, wood shavings flying everywhere, crutch by crutch, precisely placing each one around the piano to build back stability. After about 3 hours, 25 minutes and 12 seconds, he says, “My work here is done” and starts to walk away. I jumped up to shoot this amazing sight just before he disappears as fast as he arrived into a mirage. I never got his name, so, I just called him THE SOFT GRAND PIANO MAN and his legend lives on. Note: To help this great man continue his work donations are encouraged, Please Help! Make checks payable to Mike McGlothlen. Thank You!

Limits of Painting dialogue contd… Title: THE GAZE Art on a platform at eye level: The Limits of Painting. Perched high to catch the viewer, viewing themselves…viewing. / The word Art (text) with a small ‘a’, rises to the object as meaning. It alludes to 60’s Pop Art icon ‘LOVE” by Robert Indiana, New York park, USA, making the object secular & of mass appeal. The construct is one of time reference to stylisation in Art. The pedastool is of varying time pieces, historically in cultural context. The material, pinewood, a design of apolitical, secular value; mass commercial appeal. The ‘bird’ of fantasy perched on the ridge is from contemporary consumption. The bottle of ‘mineral water’ anchored to its fate. Brand name: not another bloody water. The Food offering is of a religious, cultural connotation, 5 loaves & 5 fishes from the Bible, given form in a domestic & contemporary setting.

Scanned Letter. Olanzapine ( Zyprexa ) a drug widely used in psychiatry has been found to have health risks. For your attention. If you do not think this is art, try getting a response from a government department, then try getting a futher response that admits it is aware of a health risk related to an authorisation only medication. I only found out about the health risk from a US Public Broadcast TV News item. My doctors didn’t tell me. A Psych nurse said I was lying about the health risk until I produced the letter to her. Having worked in a bank, and although resigned form the service of that governent bank, I still have not been legally discharged from the Office of the Crown secretariate, I can certify this as a true and correct copy.
“For me it’s a great visual metaphor to represent the journey from the “seen” – the mundane and bland – to the “unseen” that beckons when walking through the door – the dream, the hope, the extraordinary. If you don’t open up your mind and be prepared to take the journey through the door, you will never escape the trappings of the present…” / By monocotylidono / Thank you my friend for putting into words what i wanted this piece to mean! I have been sitting on this for a while now, it started off as a doodle that i quite liked, which i developed and eventually drew out, coloured and scanned. Then it sat on my desktop for about a month, occasionally when i had time i opened it up and did a bit of work on it… so i’m pleased to finally see it complete / Most of the time i spent working on it was masking out the original white background, so that all the edges were nice and crisp – i do tend to get pretty obsessive about my work sometimes has to be done nicely! (I’m some sure other artists are the same) Still i am pleased with how it has turned out! I fancied doing something a bit more stylised for a change, most of the work i have been doing recently has still been stylised, but not so much as this, it has lost a bit of that “cartoony” (for lack of a better word) look to it. I think the emotions behind this are fairly obvious, its more or less saying “I lost my appetite for life” as in getting fed up with your situation, waiting for a change and looking for something new. You know when you kinda get that Zombie-like feeling, not depressed but just miserable i guess, like your not properly awake? Yeah? Well thats the emotion behind this… ok so maybe not that clear! And the “so i sat and nibbled at myself instead” part is where you feel like something is eating away at you, and you can see if its yourself or not… oh dear, sorry thats a bit confusing! But i’m sure there will be someone who gets it/can relate to it! Like a lot of my work i guess its a bit autobiographical, sometimes i wish i could just speed up, stop or delete parts of life… just like Sky+ haha!
