Hypnotic by salsbells69
View looking up the stairwell of the Point Hicks lighthouse, Croajingolong National Park. This lighthouse is immaculate and has been well looked after. It was named after Leutenant HICKS who was the first person to site this part of Australia during Captain Cooks voyage. They continued up the East coast of Australia eventually landing at the town called Seventeen Seventy. / Thankyou very much to the person who purchased my image as a card! You have made me very happy!!!! :D

Looking Up The Tower by Dave Warren
This is insde the Lowe Stand, i was sat on the floor looking up the tower, you can see the remains of a spiral stone staircase that would be accessed from the second floor to go to the top of the tower, unfortunately there is no floor left and no way up, shame really i would love to have a shot from the top.

Infinite Stairs by Maria Langer
I was in Florida in April (2008) and visited the St. Augustine Lighthouse. I took these shots from a spot near the top after making the climb. I actually took MANY shots inside the lighthouse that day. I think I like this one the best because it really imparts the feeling of infinity. These stairs could go down forever. This photo was taken in natural light. Any glare on the steps is a reflection from light from above or a window. Photo Details: / Camera: Nikon CoolPix S550 / Exposure: 1/125 / Aperture: f/4.6 / Focal Length: 11.2mm / ISO: 800

Inspired by Nature by Paul Tupman
Spiral staircase in the Vatican Museum. / I love spiral staircases and this is an amazing example. Definately inspired by nature, when you looked at it you coudn’t help but see the shell like forms appearing. I would love to photograph this with nobody else around, but I actually feel the people add some scale to this piece and I dont mind them being there at all. If I didnt have the Vatican Guards looking over my shoulder I would have been there all day!

my downward spiral by blackoutangel
if one cares at all for the truth, it is important / to periodically step back and look at what defines / the world around us, and by extension, ourselves. / in algonquin river state hospital’s case, it is defined by / its grand ambitions and idealistic foundation / and now, by the collapse of these noble ambitions. / it is a place haunted by the scores of tragedies that litter its past, / by its inability to integrate into the world around it, / and its inevitable decline into obsolescence and disrepair - / much like me. / if i were to be honest, i don’t want to see it demolished, / but i don’t want to see it restored either. / it is what it is because of these things, / and its status as some behemoth / enshrouded in its own obscurity and decay makes it / larger than life, legendary even. / to tear it down to make some development or store / seems so pedestrian, insultingly dull, in much the same way as / trying to undo all of the damage wrought upon it, / cleaning it and sterilizing it and packaging it for the masses / ultimately belittles what it truly is. you may look at it / and wince at the sheer scale of the calamity it has become, / but no matter what you think it has finally revealed its true nature, / and has become something far more intricate and ornate / than our ordinary world, / with its gray cubicles and prefabricated sentiments, allows. / to see algonquin river state hospital, you have to actively seek it, / much like you are making a pilgrimage to some hallowed site / that is a shrine to all that fails, all hopes that are smashed by time. / to change it, to ‘save’ it, ultimately destroys it anyway. / and so too, i suppose there is something necessary about / my own longing to leave this world. if i were not consumed by my / relentless desire for my own destruction, why would i seek such things? / sometimes it is the very things that eat us apart, / that ultimately kill us, even, that are our own defining characteristics. / i have no delusions about my own greatness, or lack thereof, but nevertheless / if edgar allen poe wouldn’t have followed a trajectory that left him / dead in some back street’s gutter, if van gogh hadn’t followed a path / of loneliness so severe that it drove him mad - / would we ever know of their works? would they even have accomplished any? / i postulate that dissatisfaction is the mother of creation. / without it we have no incentive to create or to change, as / contentment is suspicious of change, lest it throw off comfortable equilibrium. / and so i suppose my own defining characteristics are a necessary evil. / were i to be happy, were i not to suffer, / this work that i do that defines me, that is paradoxically one of my only joys / would likely cease to be as well. / i don’t want to be a walmart, a business park, a playground. / when i am gone, let it be left to those few who care / to wonder at what drove me to do what i do, and / what frightening and magnificent things i saw in places like this. / i have chosen this path and where it will lead me, all in the hope that / it will entertain, edify, and maybe even enlighten / those of you gracious enough to join me and peer into my life through / the small window of my camera’s lens. / this is my downward spiral in all its splendor, friends. / enjoy. / -—-—-—-—-—-——- / photo taken at algonquin river state hospital. / more of my work is online at www.abandonedamerica.org

Stairway To Kevin by Peter Hill
The real “Stairway To Kevin” is a music shop in nearby Leura mall, approached by …. stairs. Yes, they do have Led Zeppelin, and also a fine collection of folk and jazz. Alas, no Kevin. These are the steps long ago carved into the sandstone cliff at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains National Park which are referred to here

The Long Way Up. by Anthony Vella
This Candid shot was taken from about 100 meters away. The steps are over 300 years old, and lead down to a beautiful, lush valley, where a small stream of water is found nearly all year round. Canes like those used for making baskets and fish-traps grow abundantly in this valley besides a large variety of vegitables.

Old Building in Zebbug, Gozo by Anthony Vella
One of quite a few old buildings left to crumble and fall as it would be too expensive to restore and better to demolish altogether and erect a new building in place. However recent laws are protecting old buildings and new ones are to be similar in design as much as possible. New stonework is prohibited on the exterior so old stones are preserved during demolishing and reused.

Supper by maka1967
Taken last early winter on film. Traditionally, high steps and stone or bronze carvings of beasts of prey are symbols of power in China. In ancient society, government offices had high steps (No concept of “barrier-free” then.) and placed carvings of beast guards beside their doors. Today this is still a convention to a great extent. Even many banks and stores practise it. The power culture still prevails. This scene, besides its sadness, reminded me the traditional Chinese phrase to describe prisoner, literally “captive under steps”.

Bear's Breeches - Acanthus mollis by Anthony Vella
Bear’s Breeches. A frequently found wild flower. Flowers from Spring till the beginning of Summer. In Summer it shoots its seed with a noise similar to that of a pistol. This picture was taken in Xlendi Bay in the sister Island of Gozo. In the background could be seen lichen covered steps dug out in solid rock a few hundred years ago, which lead to the Xlendi watch tower.
